Too Male, Too Pale

Guerilla Girls Proclaim Internet too Male, too Pale 1995
The Guerrilla girls symbolize the possibility of matriarchal society, in which men are not viewed as the primary source of income, the head of their family, or the President of every company. These women fight for the voice of thousands of female artists that have been isolated, neglected, and silenced for many years. Female inequality and oppression is a social dilemma that has been present for centuries. The Guerrilla girls use artwork, posters, discussions, and galleries to convey their message to empower female artists. Their book “Confessions of The Guerrilla Girls” includes an essay on their history, an interview, posters, projects, love and hate letters, and even post cards.

The Advantages of Being a Woman Artist 1987

Even being a women artist has become an issue of social inequality, art should be expressed without boundaries or restraints. The Guerilla Girls found motivation for their cause after realizing that the Museum of Modern Art in New York had opened an exhibition “An international Survey of Painting and sculpture”, which only included 13 women artists out 169 featured artists. They decided to use statistics to show the lack of gender diversity in galleries and museums. After thorough investigation they recognized that female artists were highly recognized during the 1970’s until the price of art highly increased during the 1980’s and male artists were significantly preferred. Using statistics, humor, and intelligent remarks about controversial topics in their art has allowed their movement to be highly noticed.

The Guerrilla girls address political issues that cause social tension and controversy against their work. Although much of society supports their movement, there are many men and people who are against their work and beliefs. Their acts of resistance help reveal the exclusion and inequality of female artists.Throughout all the decades of their work the Gorilla masks have never been taken off and no identities have ever been revealed. Although the group of women has been recognized throughout the world, their identities and amount of members remain anonymous. Protecting their identities is essential to maintain a low profile and continuing their careers without any problems. Confronting some of the most powerful people in the country can cause serious consequences but their main purpose is to emphasize their cause and not their personalities.
